While this may remind you of a quote from a poster sold from a magazine conveniently located in the seat back in front of you, for me it has a slightly different origin. I first read this from the inside of an airplane at 13,000 ft next to a wide open door with a 120mph wind blowing outside. You see prior to becoming the responsible, mature, adult I am today, I made about 2,000 skydives. Ok, mature and responsible are a bit of a leap, but the skydiver part is accurate. Anyone who says "who would jump out of a perfectly good airplane" has clearly never taken off in an airplane maintained according to skydiving standards. In one year while I was jumping, more skydivers died in plane crashes than from actually skydiving. You see the only person crazier than a skydiver is the pilot flying the airplane.

Last Friday, I sat with one of our newest junior executives who asked me, "Why is it that people spend so much money hiring us when they don't take our advice?" My gut response was, "Thank God they don't know what we know." "There is no 'I' in team." This catchy little phrase has found its way into management books, sitcoms, and even our children's classrooms. In its most innocent form, it is meant to remind us that the team is more important than the individual.
